Inside the peloton: Craig Burge

During 2025, Craige Burge celebrated 50 years of bike racing, including almost 200 wins. A former member of Canada’s Olympic Team and Canadian Championship winner, Craig was ready to continue racing, and GFNY represented a great opportunity for him to celebrate fifty years in racing.
Craig raced in GFNY NYC World Championship and was a qualifier. But cancer surgery the month after the race sidelined Craig for a bit. Undeterred, Craig raced in Turkey winning bronze medals in a time trial and road race and qualifying for a world championship in Japan in 2026.
To say that Craig was “back” would be an understatement.
Fast forward to NYC in 2026, where Craig started in the qualifier corral and paired the trip to the Big Apple and a visit with his son.
Never satisfied, and after racing for so long, Craig is constantly looking to reinvent himself. He became interested in GFNY as he had lived and worked in New York City in the 90s, and had fond memories of racing in Prospect and Central Park. Racing the Palisades was an item to cross off of his racing wish list.
Always interested in challenging events with interesting destinations, the logistics of New York City worked perfectly. With all of his racing experience, safety in racing has always been important to Craig, and so the road closures and the creation of a safe event went a long way. Being in a group ride with Raoul Alcala was icing on the cake as it is for so many GFNY riders.
Living in Ottawa, Craig is recommending GFNY Ottawa. “GFNY Ottawa is an event that will provide everything riders should expect from a well run event, a challenging course, a strong field, (end-to-end) chip timing, amazing photos, and so many other qualities.”
Craig loves Ottawa as a race location, (all home biases aside), Craig tells us, “Ottawa is an amazing place for riding. We have the Gatineau Park nearby with a 40km loop ( and a 22 km loop within the park that are pristine roads ) with about
600 meters elevation. On weekends the cars can enter only in the afternoon. There are also plenty of country roads including the 2026 GFNY Ottawa parcours.
For racers who base here we are close to the Ontario, Quebec, NewYork, NJ, Vermont races that can be done within a weekend of driving.”
